John Craig Venter (born October 14, 1946) is an American scientist, geneticist, and entrepreneur who works in the fields of genetics and biochemistry. As one of the pioneers in human genome sequencing and transfection, he is credited with being one of the first to transfect cells with a synthetic genome. Celera Genomics, The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), and the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) were all established by Venter, who is currently focusing his efforts at JCVI on the creation of synthetic biological entities. On Time magazine’s Time 100 list of the most important people in the world, he was included in both the 2007 and 2008 editions. In 2010, the British magazine New Statesman ranked Craig Venter 14th on their list of “The World’s 50 Most Influential Figures 2010,” which included people such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. He is on the Advisory Board of the United States Science and Engineering Festival (USA Science and Engineering Festival).
