Joseph Anthony Pisarcik (born July 2, 1952, in Kingston, Pennsylvania) is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League for eight seasons, from 1977 to 1984. He attended West Side Central Catholic High School (later Bishop O’Reilly, which is now closed) and New Mexico State University, where he played high school football and college football. When he initially became pro, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, where he spent three seasons from 1974 to 1976. Pisarcik began his NFL career with the New York Giants, and he is best remembered for his performance in a November 19, 1978, game in which the Giants were leading 17–12 with only seconds left to play and their opponent out of time-outs, but lost after his handoff to Larry Csonka was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Herman Edwards of the Philadelphia Eagles, who had won the game 17–12. It has subsequently been dubbed “The Fumble” by Giants supporters and “The Miracle at the Meadowlands” by Eagles fans, among other names. After being released by the Giants in 1980, Pisarcik joined with the Eagles, where he remained until his retirement after the conclusion of the 1984 season. He continues to live in the New Jersey region and serves as the President and CEO of the NFL Alumni Association in Newark, New Jersey. He has five children: Kristin, Lindsey, Jake, Joseph, and Katie, who are his pride and joy.
