John Harwood (born 1956) is a journalist who works for CNBC as the Chief Washington Correspondent. He also contributes to The New York Times as a writer. He publishes a weekly piece about Washington politics and policy called “The Caucus,” which appears every Monday. He worked for The Wall Street Journal before joining The New York Times. Harwood, a 1978 Duke University magna cum laude graduate, has also worked as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He appears frequently on Gwen Ifill’s PBS public affairs programme Washington Week, as well as NBC’s Meet the Press and MSNBC’s Morning Joe. He attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, where he was the 2010 graduating class’s commencement speaker. Richard Harwood, Harwood’s father, worked for The Louisville Times and The Washington Post as a reporter and writer. Harwood’s mother was an ardent campaigner for Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1968, according to John Harwood’s essay in The Washington Post (April 30, 2000, page B4), and Harwood, at the age of 11, appeared in a TV ad for Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 campaign. Tim Russert’s last taped interview, which was to run the weekend of June 14, 2008, only hours before Russert’s death, featured Harwood and co-author Gerald Seib as guests on Russert’s MSNBC eponymous interview programme. Harwood is a Silver Spring, Maryland resident.
