DJ Casper, the musician and producer most recognized for inventing the Cha Cha Slide dance fad, has died at the age of 58.
DJ Casper’s wife Kim reported to Chicago-based news station ABC7 on Monday that the chart-topping star died surrounded by his loved ones.
The entertainer, whose legal name was Willie Perry Jr. and who also went by the stage names Mr. C The Slide Man and Casper due to his penchant for wearing all-white costumes on stage, began treatment for cancer in 2016.
In an interview with ABC7 last year, he stated, “They diagnosed me in 2016 with two types of cancer, renal and Neuroendocrine, which is kidney and liver.”

He grew up in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. Joyce Perry is his wife. He was diagnosed with both kidney and neuroendocrine tumors in 2016. Casper got his stage moniker from his habit of wearing mostly white while performing. Perry Jr. died on August 6, 2023, at the age of 58, from renal and liver cancer.
